| The cottage Surfboard was 1 of 6 that belonged to The Silver Sands Hotel. The Silver Sands was built as the cottage of a Dr. Loring Lombard c. 1907. Originally much smaller, it evolved into a summer hotel, renting rooms and serving meals. Eventually it was converted to efficiency units. There were six individual cottages also on the property. In 1978, a winter storm severely damaged the front of the building and it was torn down." It was Mr. Morton that had Silver Sands redesigned into efficiency units. The hotel had 8, 2 bedroom oceanfront efficiencies apartments, living room, efficiency kitchens and baths with tubs only, no showers. This hotel was washed out in 1978. The location is the lot to the south west that is currently protecting dune grass. The cottages that belonged to Silver Sands are the 6 house lots on Morning Street (Extension). Higgins Beach Chronicle (date unknown) which has some information on Hiram
Higgins. He inherited the land from his father Captain Samuel Higgins.
The first cottages were built in 1876 on leased land. Hiram never sold any
of the land. He died in 1892 and his children, Edward Walter and Alice
began to sell lots.
